A Guide for BASRaT Members
What is continuing professional development?
The term continuing professional development (CPD) is used to describe the process to maintain,
develop and enhance skills, knowledge and competence in order to continually improve your clinical ability.
Demonstrating your continued professional development is incredibly important, because the
demand for quality, accountability and efficacy of practice has never been greater. It is
essential that Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers can demonstrate that they are keeping
abreast of new knowledge, techniques and developments related to their professional practice,
so you can prove that you provide the best quality service to your clients.
What are the BASRaT CPD requirements?
In order to maintain your BASRaT membership you are required to have demonstrated your
participation in at least 20 hours CPD activity every two years. This cannot be all from one
single course, that is, if you were undertaking an MSc or similar course, this can only count
for a maximum of 15 hours CPD over the two years. This maximum allocation of hours is only
on approval of the training and education committee of BASRaT. Transcripts of content of all
courses participated in, along with details of the tutors and number of hours completed on the
course, must be submitted to the training and education committee of BASRaT for approval and
award of CPD hours credit. The submission of an education and training form can be done either
at the end of the two-year period or following each individual course.
What courses are suitable and how are they credited?
At the present time your attendance on any relevant clinically related course can be claimed
against your CPD requirement. Each individual course will be taken on merit and will be given a
value in CPD hours by the training and education committee on application. The value of each
course in terms of CPD hours will be judged on a number of factors, these will include the course
tutor(s); the academic level of the course; the nature of the course (lecture/practical) and if
the course was examined (with proof of passing being required).
How do I record my CPD?
You will need a CPD attendance record form, after each course you participate on, complete the
form and attach the necessary supporting documentation (a copy of the course outline and certificate
of attendance) and send it to the training and education committee of BASRaT either immediately after
the course or prior to the end of your two year CPD period. The training and education committee will
then assess the course content and ascribe a total number of CPD hours value to the course and log
your acquired hours on the membership education database and notify you of their decision regarding
the CPD time value of the course.
An official attendance record form can be downloaded from the Members Area.
What if I have a career break?
If for some reason you have to or want to stop practicing for a period
of time, then your CPD requirements remain the same. If that period
out of clinical practice is longer than 24 months you would need
to reprove your competency. (conditions apply)
Who do I talk to about CPD?
If you have any questions regarding any aspect of CPD, please
read all the information on this website before contacting
the BASRaT CPD officer via the contact page.
