New Guidance on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Sport Rehabilitation

The British Association of Sport Rehabilitators (BASRaT) has today published new professional guidance to support registrants in the safe, ethical, and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) within sport rehabilitation practice.

As AI technologies become increasingly embedded across healthcare, BASRaT recognises both the opportunities and the risks they present. This guidance has been developed to ensure that innovation is adopted responsibly, with patient safety and professional accountability remaining paramount.

At the centre of the guidance is a clear and uncompromising principle: AI is a tool, not a practitioner. Registrants remain fully accountable for all clinical decisions, advice, and records, regardless of whether AI has been used to support these processes.

The guidance provides practical direction across key areas of practice, including:

  • Clinical accountability and the ‘human-in-the-loop’ principle

  • Use of AI in clinical record keeping, including AI scribes

  • Data protection, consent, and confidentiality, with explicit requirements around the handling of patient information

  • Training and competence, ensuring practitioners understand both the capabilities and limitations of AI tools

Importantly, the guidance sets clear expectations around the use of patient data. Registrants must not input personally identifiable information into AI systems unless using secure, compliant platforms, and must ensure patients are fully informed where AI contributes to their care.

A practical checklist is also included to support clinicians in integrating AI safely into day-to-day practice.

This publication forms part of BASRaT’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high professional standards while supporting the profession to engage with emerging technologies. It aligns with BASRaT’s Standards of Ethics and Behaviour and existing clinical governance frameworks.

BASRaT registrants can access the full guidance via the Resources area of the member portal.
